These are the carriage conditions when you are travelling with your bike with Renfe AVE, Long Distance, and Avant trains:
Folded or disassembled bicycles: Bikes that have been folded or dismantled do not require a bike reservation and can be transported as regular luggage. Please be aware that this does not apply to sleeper (night) trains. A bike booking is free but required, and can only be made through Renfe. Bikes are allowed on all AVE, Long Distance, and Avant trains in Spain, subject to the following conditions:
- The pedals must be removed and the handlebar should be turned 90 degrees.
- They must be kept in the luggage racks located at the ends of each carriage.
- The bicycle must be folded or disassembled before being stored in a bike box or bag. The measurements must not be larger than 120x90x40cm (length-height-width).
Folded bicycles do not need to be transported in a travel bag on Medium Distance, Suburban, and Metric Gauge trains. They can be stored in the luggage spaces at the ends of each carriage.
Bike reservations for bikes that have not been folded or disassembled: Please contact us through the contact form.
These are the carriage conditions when you are travelling with your bike with Renfe AVLO trains:
Only folding scooters and bicycles are permitted, but they must not exceed the maximum dimensions set forth for luggage: 85x60x35cm for a maximum total length of 180cm, or 55x35x25cm for a carry-on bag with no weight restriction (additional luggage for an additional cost). Scooters and bicycles need to be folded up and stored in their carrying case at all times.
Bicycles and Kick Scooters (Non-Electric): These can be transported on all trains, provided they are folded or disassembled and placed in a carrying case. Specific dimensions apply to consider them as hand luggage or special luggage.
E-Bikes:
- Cercanías (Commuter) and Feve Trains: You can travel with your bike for free. Each passenger is allowed to bring one bicycle. Bicycles must be placed in designated areas on the train. If such areas are not marked, place the bike on the access platform without obstructing passageways or non-tip-up seating areas. If the train is too crowded and you cannot board with your bicycle, you can either wait for the next train or request a refund.
- Media Distancia (Mid-Distance) Trains: Bicycles are allowed but require booking. Each train has space for up to three bicycles. If your journey is over 100 km, there is a 3-euro fee; for shorter journeys, it is free, but you must still book a space. Unfolded bicycles travel in specific areas on board, while folded bicycles can be carried as hand luggage or special luggage depending on their size.
- AVE (High-Speed), Larga Distancia (Long Distance), Avant (Mid-Distance High-Speed) Trains: Bicycles must be folded or disassembled and placed in a bag. Each passenger is allowed one bicycle or scooter. For dimensions under 180 cm, the bicycle is considered hand luggage. If it exceeds these dimensions, it is treated as special luggage. Pedals must be removed, and the handlebars turned 90 degrees. On AVE and Larga Distancia trains, if your bicycle exceeds the hand luggage size, you must add the Bicycle Add-on when purchasing your ticket. This service is free of charge. On AVE International trains between Spain and France, luggage tagging is mandatory.
General Rules: Electric bicycles are allowed, but electric scooters, unicycles, and similar vehicles are not permitted on trains for safety reasons, with exceptions for mobility aids. You are responsible for the care and handling of your bicycle to avoid damage to the train or inconvenience to other passengers. These policies aim to facilitate the intermodal transport of bicycles and promote sustainable mobility. For further details, you can visit RENFE's official pages on bike transport.
